When it comes to finding the perfect fitting shirt, measurements are key. Whether you're shopping for ready-to-wear or getting a custom-made shirt, knowing your measurements is important - but how exactly should you measure yourself for a shirt?

Why is it important to measure yourself for a shirt?

Proper measurements ensure a comfortable fit and a polished look. Ill-fitting shirts can be uncomfortable and may not look as sharp as a well-fitted one. We always recommend you allow between six to eight inches for freedom of movement from the exact measurements that you take.

    The Important Parts to measure

    Step 1: Neck Measurement

Start by measuring around the base of your neck where the collar of the shirt would normally sit. Make sure to keep the tape measure comfortably loose for a proper fit.

    Step 2: Chest Measurement

Next, measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your armpits and across your shoulder blades. Keep the tape measure parallel to the ground for an accurate measurement.

    Step 3: Sleeve Measurement

To measure your sleeve length, start from the centre back of your neck and measure across the top of your shoulder and down to your wrist. This will give you the ideal sleeve length for your shirt.

    Step 4: Waist Measurement

For the waist measurement, wrap the tape measure around your natural waistline, which is typically the narrowest part of your torso. Make sure it's not too tight or too loose for an accurate measurement.

    Step 5: Shirt Length Measurement

Lastly, measure from the base of your neck down to where you want the shirt to end. This will give you the perfect length for your shirt, ensuring it's not too long or too short.

By following these precise steps and taking accurate measurements, you can find the ideal shirt size that fits you perfectly. Here at H&K, we have two shirt fits:

    Classic Fit

A traditional cut that is roomier in fit and freer in movement. Perfect for those who want to look smart and feel comfortable.

    Contemporary Fit

Created with a well-considered slimmer cut to the body and sleeves by our in-house tailors, offering a more modern tapered silhouette.

If you are still unsure of which shirt is best for you, please use our size recommender 'what's my size', which is available on every shirt product page. This will allow you to enter some of your key measurements and will provide a recommendation for the best size to order. Even after all these steps, should the shirt not fit, you have 30 days to return for an exchange or refund.
